Winter Guard at Alpharetta High School
What is winter guard? Winter guard is an indoor competitive activity where students learn a routine to recorded music; performers learn to dance, spin flag and rifle.
What is winter guard at Alpharetta? We have three teams: a nationally ranked varsity team, a highly competitive JV team, and a very successful cadet (middle school) team. Here are samples of our teams from past years.
Alpharetta Varsity 2019 (world championships performance)
Alpharetta JV 2019 (state championships performance)

Who will teach the students? We have a team of people. Mr. Jenkins is the overall director for the program. Lead instructors are Mrs. Kaleigh Schlosser and Mrs. Elizabeth Lukes who also run the high school teams. We have junior staff members who will also work with Mr. Jenkins, Mrs. Schlosser, and Mrs. Lukes. Our junior staff members (Annette, Elizabeth, and Janessa) are former Alpharetta students who are currently in college.
When will the teams practice? Each team has different practice times. The varsity team usually rehearses on Tuesday and Thursday. The JV team usually practices on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The Cadet team usually practices on Mondays and Thursdays. There will also be an occasional weekend practice (Saturday or Sunday). Please check our band calendar for times and days.
Some rehearsals may go a little longer once we get into learning our actual production. Practices are important because that when students learn skills and learn their part. It’s not written down, so it’s hard for the team to progress if we are always having to catch students up. That becomes frustrating on everyone else. COVID related reasons are TOTALLY excusable. Please do not have your student show up if they have to answer “yes” to any of our COVID questions or if they’re sick. Other than that, we need DEDICATED and LOYAL students. That has been the key to our success.
What is the link to the band website? Click here for the band website. Here you will find information regarding our band directors, board members, band program, color guard program, announcements, CHARMS, calendar and more. Please take a moment to explore our website.
How much does it cost? The fees differ each year based on many factors. Each team’s fees are also different. We will communicate to each team what the fees are once we are able to set the fee for the season. Fees are paid to Alpharetta Band Booster Association through our Charms website or parents can write a check.
What will my fees include? Fee amounts for each team are different. However, what the fees include are the same (competition fees, instructor stipends, props, flags, costumes, certain accessories, etc.). In addition to the team fees, members should have the following personal items which they can order through our booster organization (warm up outfit, equipment bag, duffle bag). The cost for these items will be communicated at the same time when the team fee is communicated.
Does my student need to purchase a rifle? Yes. Please do so immediately so that it will have time to ship and get to you sooner than later. Please call The Band Hall at 800-398-3064 and tell them your student is a member of the Alpharetta winter guard and you need to buy a rifle. You may also order online at 37.5 in rifle with black strap and black bolt). Please be sure to make a special note that your student is a member at Alpharetta.
What should my student wear for practice? All our winter guard teams wear black leggings and black leotard or a form fitting top to all practices. The look should be what you envision at a dance studio.
When will the team compete? Competitions are on Saturday in February and March. Please check our band calendar for those dates. Detailed information about each competition will be emailed out during the week leading up to the competition.
What is this “color guard class” I keep hearing about? We have a color guard class at the high school called Ethnic Music Studies. We strongly encourage all 8th graders to sign up for that class for next year. This class is also good for freshmen and sophomores before they enroll in our new IB Dance class for their junior and senior year! We’re so excited to offer IB Dance for our junior and seniors in our color guard program.
If you have more questions, please feel free to email me. Thank you in advance for reading this and for your support/dedication to our program. We are looking forward to another outstanding cadet program!
